Denise, I'm not sure why the Annie Le case is receiving so much media attention when other, similar cases aren't. But I'd venture to guess that it's a combination of her extreme prettiness, stratospheric intelligence, and reputedly wonderful personality mixed with the fact that the murder happened under unusual circumstances at one of the world's finest universities and so close to her wedding day.
But I think the bottom line is that if she weren't as extraordinarily pretty (in my estimation) as she was, her story wouldn't have gained as much media traction as it has.
Still, I'm glad it has, even though it breaks my heart to think of such an exceptionally promising young life destroyed and her family, finance, and friends crushed by it. As someone said of her who knew her well, "She was a diamond."

Oh, I know, Nagarjuna...sigh. Language-wise I live vicariously through my daughters. Not that I think either of them have the gift Denise seems to have. They both had to work hard at it, and to live in countries where the languages were spoken (France, Spain, Mexico, Canada).
I seem to have a mental block where languages are concerned. I even lived in Japan for 10 months and the Czech Republic for six, and picked up very little of either language. Denise would have been fluent and conversing!
Goblinbee, I recently saw a TV program that featured a semi-autistic savant who, among his other astounding capacities, was able to learn enough Icelandic (I believe it was) in just a few short days to converse fluently in it. Icelandic or whatever language it was is said to be one of the most torturously difficult languages in the world to learn, and yet he made it look incredibly easy. It's mind-boggling what human beings--or, at least some human beings are capable of. I wish I had more of that prodigious capability. :-)

More bones of undetermined origin also were found on property adjacent to the home, Lt. Chris Orrey of the Hayward Police Department said.
"We have located what appear to be bones on both properties," Orrey told reporters. "We can't tell at this point if those bones are human or animal."
The evidence has been sent to a laboratory for analysis, Orrey said.

Both warrants were being executed simultaneously Tuesday, police said.
Garecht's mother said Tuesday that she holds out hope that her daughter will be found alive.

The Garridos face a combined 29 felony counts in connection with the 1991 kidnapping of Dugard, then 11, from South Lake Tahoe, California.
Authorities believe the couple held Dugard in a well-hidden compound behind their home for 18 years and have said Phillip Garrido, a registered sex offender, fathered two children with Dugard. The Garridos live near Antioch, California, in unincorporated Contra Costa County, east of San Francisco.
Police from both agencies said that while Garrido has not been named a suspect in the other abductions, he cannot be eliminated as a suspect in either case. Neither police department has interviewed Dugard, police said.
Garecht was abducted by a stranger in front of a market in south Hayward on November 19, 1988, according to Murch's Web site on her missing daughter, MissingMichaela.com. Over the past two decades, police have followed some 13,000 tips in investigating her disappearance, Orrey said.

She said Hayward police have also noted similarities between the Garecht and Dugard cases. The victims were similar in age and appearance, Orrey said, and both were abducted in daylight, in a "brazen" manner.
The suspect vehicle in the Garecht case is also similar to the sedan found on the Garrido property, she added, and in pictures from that time, Garrido appears to resemble a sketch of a suspect based on a witness description.
Murch said she also noticed the similarities in their cases and thought it could lead to finding her daughter.
"My first thought when I heard Jaycee was found was please, God, let Michaela be with her," Murch said.
Misheloff failed to make it home from school on January 30, 1989, Dublin Police Lt. Kurt von Savoye said.
"For 20 years, we have been attempting to determine what happened." There is no eyewitness that could say with certainty she was abducted, and evidence in the case was limited, he said.
A witness did report seeing Misheloff getting into a vehicle, a sedan similar to one found on the Garrido property, at the time of her disappearance, von Savoye said. Garrido "has demonstrated a propensity to abduct young girls," police said in a statement, and he was released from prison a few months before Misheloff disappeared. Dublin is about 40 miles from Antioch.

Misheloff's family is aware of the search warrant execution but are out of town on a family emergency, von Savoye said.
In the property search, there are no current plans in place to raze structures, Orrey said, but "we are very interested in what might be behind walls, under flooring, under the ground." Authorities are prepared to disassemble structures if needed, she said.

I have been wondering what Jaycee and her daughters have said to the police. Surely, they have been interviewed. I also wonder if these 3, with the bond that they have ended up having with the Garridos, would be hesitant to tell certain truths. They might not even know of any other crimes that have been committed. But I hope Jaycee is able to describe and possibly identify each individual that she has seen in the past 18 years.
Why, oh why, would they even give this man a bail amount? What if he actually came up with the money!!! Highly unlikely, but it is still a possibility for him to walk free.
I read in the Mercury News (believe it to be a CA site) that the police haven't been able to speak with her much.
It's my understanding he can't walk free on bail bc of the circumstances of his already existing parole.
I am sure he would be scared to death to step one foot out the protection of that jail right now. I feel good knowing he is quacking in his boots constantly.

I also read that Jaycee is helping in the investigation. But the authorities are giving her and her family time.
And I agree that he is safer in jail than he is outside of their protective custody. But if he did make bail and was released, the government would spend much money to remove him from the jail secretly and find him a safe place to hide out. Despicable.
Coonhound. I think she is talking to the FBI at least. I do not think they would have thought to dig next door weeks ago without something to go on. Other little things that have happened too. I think she has a lot to deal with, but she was also resolved (stuck) for so very long too. Having had access to the Internet, email, etc., she probably had the knowledge to know she needed to remember things. I am sure she probably helped regarding the neighbor reports of what might have been prostitute parties. I am sure the FBI knows quite a bit.
I could never imagine being in Jaycee's shoes ever, but she survived, she has to be one tough woman.

Tara, my short answer to your question is that I don't think homosexuality is any more of an "illness" than is heterosexuality provided the "object" of one's sexual desire is appropriate (e.g., "legal") and the strength of that desire is not unduly harmful or unhealthy. Pedophilia, on the other hand, is an illness because the object of the pedophile's desire is inappropriate and acting out that desire is extremely harmful to the child and often also to the pedophile who molests.
I suspect that same-sex attraction and pedophilia along with, for that matter,heterosexuality are generally products of nature AND nurture, in varying proportions from person to person.
I think in bei's mind the "big black men" would be more intimidated to a little caucasion man like garrido.

Hi, Denise. My take on it is this: the author of the blog is a Canadian woman who has five daughters, all of whom she claims were molested by their father. There are three pedophiles she refers to: 1-the father of her children, 2-Garrido, 3-another case in California in the 20s.
Nagarjuna, I did read and understand each word you posted to me about supposing I was something I am not. I cannot say what I would do in circumstances that I would not find myself in, due to the fact that I think about what God would want from me.
It would be better if we just suppose I was a single mother struggling to keep it all together for 3 rambunctious boys that made me crazy, fighting all of the time. And times got so hard that Satan flashed temptations in my face many times, with opportunities for me to be dishonest and do other people wrong. Lets also suppose that I have overwhelming desires to take those ample opportunities and use them to my advantage. What would I do? I would think about what God wants from me. And I would do the right thing.
You might as well ask me to suppose I had a legitimate brain damage, and I had the urge to pick my nose in public and eat it. What would I do? I suppose, if I had already been detected with this illness, I would not have been set free to roam the streets on my own again.

I am not saying that these people are anything short of horrible people and that it never ceases to amaze me how much evil is really in this world and in stating that I in no way shape or form and defending any criminal act against a child!! Coonhound, I am trying to get that supreme court info for you. someone else posted about it and I looked it up once. It is true. Pedophiles are registered as a level 1, a level 2, or a level 3. level one is a minor infraction causing the requirement to register, believing there is cause for the record and bringing attention to this person if similar crimes occur to the police entities alone. 2 is more serious, may commit again, the registry is open to the public. 3 is most serious, most likely will recommit.
Many pedophiles were classified to 2 and 3. They simply got together as a group and went to the supreme court contesting their levels. saying we only committed (caught once) this illegal sexual act once. It is not fair to place us on the registry this way. the supreme court reduced one time offenders to 1 level. Now, all these who have been psycologically examined and the authorities believe to be dangerous are able to hide amongst the public without their neighbors and children knowing to be aware. Not knowing to look for and/or report suspicious information.

I don't believe that the public should have ANY access to sex offender records, because the public is just too hysterical to handle the information like sane and rational adults, as has been amply demonstrated here. In my opinion, if a sex offender is deemed to pose enough of a threat to the public that the public needs to know about his or her offenses, he or she should remain quarantined from society.

That was a very good movie and an awfully gutsy role for Bacon to take on. He portrayed a character who was more than just a pedophile. He portrayed a living, breathing human being with a sickness who tried to fight that sickness every step of the way and rehabilitate his life and be a good, hard-working, productive citizen. He was not a monster, but a HUMAN victim of a dreadful illness that ruined his and other people's lives.

I'm not sure that there are really that many more people around with pedophilic desires than there used to be, but I suspect that we are so saturated with media ads that sexualize almost everything, including kids, that pedophilic tendencies are fanned from smoldering coals into a raging fire that, in some cases, just can't be contained. Then too, we have families more open about reporting abuse to the police, and a media more open about reporting it to the public.

Facebook respond with an auto-responder first, and typically then respond fully within 1-3 days. MySpace can take a bit longer 3-5 days usually.

MySpace and Facebook do not have an auto-detection feature for sex offenders who re-join or first join a service. the scale of the problem is so bad it requires super computers to really deal with it. At the moment I target random and specific zip codes, and then do manual name matching.

Just beware of everyone. There are already so many unavoidable dangers to your children. Keep an eye on them and always try to know where they are, who they are with and what they are doing.

I'm blessed and here's why...
As my step-son was growing up I was exactly that kind of parent to him, especially when he lived with us. He and his mother felt I was too controlling, too nosey, too bossy, too demanding, etc.
He is going on 19 now and still lives with us. Most gratefully...he has an abounding amount of respect for me and his father and he is very grateful for all our efforts. And he is so thankful that we didn't give up on him and let him just do whatever he wanted.
I'm thankful for that fact.

I was a psych major in college and took classes in abnormal psychology and related subjects. Of course, that doesn't make me expert in these matters, but I don't think one needs to be in order to apply a modicum of knowledge and common sense, or what SHOULD be common sense, and arrive at the SAME perspective that I've been conveying here.
In other words, pedophilia and other sexual abnormalities or, for that matter, normalities, don't arise out of a vacuum. They stem from a mind-bogglingly complex interaction of nature and nurture, genes and environment, biochemistry and psychology. Most of us are fortunate enough to have this interaction produce relative normality in us. But some are not. And it doesn't behoove us to hate those who are not and to post gleeful or hateful comments here about how we'd like to see such people abused or worse in prison or persecuted once they get out of prison.
When we look at sex offenders like Garrido, I think we should be breathing a sigh of relief and saying humbly to ourselves. "There but for the grace of God or fate go I." Brenda,,,that is an excellent point you made about "Sex sells". It is true. And by having 3 young, girl-crazy boys, I see their reactions and hear them speaking about girls in commercials.
I have a son going through puberty right now, and I am guessing that he gets sexual urges that he cannot fully satisfy. I worry that the frustration can build up in his brain, and perhaps cause this "illness" that Nagarjuna speaks of.
If you ask me, unfulfilled sexual urges can become very uncontrollable and make a person's mind kind of crazy. I do not want to get explicit here, but I think most persons can take care of the problem themselves, and the uncontrollable urges go away. But I worry each day for my son. I see puberty as a difficult stage, like acne, that eases up over time.
I would like to see how an automatic 50-yr sentence without parole for child molestation would change things.

Dr. Webb when children or women are raped, their life is no longer their life. They are tortured by flashback memories, trust in others, low self esteem. Their life has been destroyed. Very few can overcome this in every aspect. I many's eye, it is worse than death. I truly believe a death penalty in many of these cases is warranted. The only thing the death penalty is given for is for a murderer. This act is so much worse, not that murder isn't worth the death penalty.
Dr. David Webb, so would I like to see how it would change things. But I would like to see it for murderers as well. Actually, I would like to change the sentence to automatic death penalty. But, like Nagarjuna says, there are certain circumstances in murder that maybe couldnt be avoided.
And also, I will NEVER know if OJ Simpson killed those 2 people or not. I cannot even form my own opinion on it. And I see it this way, apparently nobody else could find out the actual truth either.
So, in essence, we either let a guilty murderer free, or if the rest of the world that believed he was guilty got their way, we might have "fried" an innocent man. I think we will never know. Even if OJ said on his death bed that he did it, I would not know if we should believe him or not.
OJ Simpson did commit the murders. The evidence was overwhelming. It was the Police handling of the evidence, and the prosecution's presentation that resulted in the verdict, plus the race issues.
Lets look at the evidence surrounding the murder of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman.
I will repeat the words of another judge, from another case, Judge Jackie Glass...'the evidence is overwhelming'.
Evidence
* DNA showed that blood found at the scene of Brown's murder was O.J. Simpson's. The odds it could have come from anyone but Simpson were about one in 170 million.[17]
* DNA analysis of blood found on a pair of Simpson's socks found in his bedroom identified it as Nicole Brown's. The blood had DNA characteristics matched by approximately only one in 9.7 billion, with odds rising to one out of 21 billion when compiling results of testing done at the two separate DNA laboratories.[9][17] Each sock had about 20 stains of blood.[9]
* DNA analysis of the blood found in, on, and near Simpson's Bronco revealed traces of Simpson's, Brown's, and Goldman's blood.[18]
* DNA analysis of bloody socks found in Simpson's bedroom proved this was Brown's blood. The blood made a similar pattern on both sides of the socks. Defense medical expert Dr. Henry Lee of the Connecticut State Police Forensic Science Laboratory testified that the only way such a pattern could appear was if Simpson had a "hole" in his ankle, or a drop of blood was placed on the sock while it was not being worn. Lee testified the collection procedure of the socks could have caused contamination.[19]
* Hair consistent with Simpson's was found on Goldman's shirt.[18]
* Several coins were found along with fresh blood drops behind Nicole's condo, in the area where the cars were parked.
* DNA analysis of blood on the left-hand glove, found outside Brown's home, was proven to be a mixture of Simpson's, Brown's, and Goldman's. Although the glove was soaked in blood, there were no blood drops leading up to, or away from the glove. No other blood was found in the area of the glove except on the glove.[18]
* The gloves contained particles of hair consistent with Goldman's hair and a cap contained carpet fibers consistent with fibers from Simpson's Bronco.[5] A knit cap at the crime scene contained hairs consistent with Simpson's.[5] Dark blue cotton fibers were found on Goldman, and the prosecution presented a witness who said Simpson wore a similarly-colored sweat suit that night.[5]
# The left-hand glove found at Nicole Brown's home and the right-hand glove found at Simpson's home proved to be a match.[20]
# LA Police Detective Phillip Vanatter could not explain why he kept the eight CCs taken as a sample of O.J. Simpson's blood for hours before recording it as evidence, and why he had it at Simpson's house when evidence was being collected, as corroborated by TV news footage.
# The LA County District Attorney's Office and the Medical Examiner's Office could not explain why 1.5 CCs of blood were missing from the original eight CCs taken from Simpson and placed into evidence.[21]
# Officers found arrest records indicating that Simpson was charged with the beating of his wife Nicole Brown. Photos of Brown's bruised and battered face from that attack were shown.
# Much of the incriminating evidence: bloody glove, bloody socks, blood in and on the Bronco, was discovered by Los Angeles Police Detective Mark Fuhrman. He was later charged with perjury for falsely claiming during the trial that he had not used the word "nigger" within ten years of the trial. During the trial he pleaded the Fifth Amendment against self-incrimination to avoid further questioning after his integrity was challenged on this point.[21]
# The bloody footprints were identified by FBI shoe expert William Bodziak as having been made by a pair of extremely rare Bruno Magli shoes, of which it has been reported that only 299 pairs were sold in the US.[5] The large size 12 (305 mm) prints matched Simpson's shoe size.[5] In the criminal trial, Simpson defense attorneys had said the prosecution had no proof Simpson had ever bought such shoes,[5] however then free-lance photographer Harry Scull claimed to have found a photograph he had taken of Simpson in 1993 that appeared to show him wearing a pair of the shoes at a public event, which was later published in the National Enquirer. Simpson's defense team claimed the photograph was doctored, although other pre-1994 photos appearing to show Simpson wearing Bruno Magli shoes were since discovered and published.[22]
# Evidence collected by LAPD criminologist Dennis Fung came under criticism. He admitted to "having missed a few drops of blood on a fence near the bodies," but on the stand he said that he "returned several weeks afterwards to collect them."[21]
# Fung admitted that he had not used rubber gloves when collecting some of the evidence.[21]
# LA Police Detective Phillip Vanatter testified that he saw photographs of press personnel leaning on Simpson's Bronco before evidence was collected.[21]
I love Judge Jackie Glass. I know her very well.
It was the race card that got him off. The bigots on the police team, and the fact that the entire jury was OJ's race sealed his earthly non-fate. I watched the entire trial. Even without the evidence that was tampered with, there was still plenty of evidence that was not tampered with that should have convicted him.
I can truly understand the jury not convicting him as they took the racism personally. But what I cannot understand, is they let a murderer go. There are other ways to handle the racial bigots.

Each time I see the argument about molesters know what they are doing, they know it is wrong, and they love the control. Then I see Nagarjuna saying that they have an illness beyond their control. I agree with both sides.
It makes me think that the abuser feels safe to have sex with persons that they do not have to have an everyday relationship with. They will never see that person again, so that person cannot make fun of them, laugh at them, and spread rumors in the abusers circle of friends.
I have been raped many times in my childhood. I now have shame when it comes to relationships. And I am ashamed to look at the person after the fact. As a matter of fact, I do not look at them, until they assure me that they still want to be there. I sometimes wished the man would have just left, and never returned. And, I think that maybe, just maybe, if I knew already that I would never see this person again, I would be more open during the moment.

I was a victim of childhood sexual abuse (at school, for two years, victim to two other boys). It was a very prestigious private (independent) school in Scotland.
I gave the Police 16 pages of statement, and a nice Detective came round to tell me they couldn't do anything.

OJ is in admin seg (administrative segregation) in prison in Nevada. There are at least 5-6 people in his unit who have said they will kill him first chance they have.

I never understood how, if he was not guilty of murder enough to go to prison. How could he be guilty of her murder to pay the girls family. Especially if they never found a different murder suspect. It would be like my neighbor accusing me of being the person that attacked them, while I was proven to be incarcerated for the 2 days before through the 2 days after they were attacked. Proof enough that I did not attack them, but I would have to pay them anyhow.

Denise, he was found 'liable' for the murders in a Civil trial. He had to pay $33 million, and so he moved to Florida, where courts cannot take your home or pension away from you in a civil judgement.
I have monitored the people who victimized me, on Facebook and MySpace, and their emails too, and although they are not in jail. I have access to everything about them, including their bank accounts.
2 separate trials Denise. The second wasn't tainted with bigots and racism. It was proven without the framed evidence. You cannot retry a criminal case when the accused was found innocent. The second trial wherein he was found guilty/responsible for the deaths, but wasn't for criminal or anything but punitive damages.
If Vincent Bugliosi had prosecuted the case, OJ would of got the death penalty, times 2, without a shadow of a doubt.

I had a biology class a few years after OJ's trials. The text we were using showed DNA samples from the scene of the crime that perfectly matched his DNA. It was as perfect a match as you could hope to get. The criminal trial was a circus, a miscarriage of justice. They got it right in the civil trial, but, as some have already stated, it was too late by then to criminally prosecute.

What I am wanting to say, I am not so sure I care to post here on this blog. I think the point I was trying to make is that, if you have been abused, maybe sometimes you cannot face sex the way normal persons do. Urgh, I hate to say this, but I am going to. Ok. (Deep breath) I think that when I sometimes get sexual urges, I could never go to my husband and tell him. I would be too ashamed. I would maybe prefer to be with a person that I would never have to look at again. I do not know why I am saying this, except to say that I think I understand some of the issues that rapists and pedophiles have. I am in no way a pedophile or a rapist. I have never had the urges to sexually harm any person, young or old. But I worried so much, because I knew that, by being abused, it was possible that I maybe could lose control myself. Denise, not all victims convict the crime committed on them. Most women go the opposite. Kind of like you described. They don't want to want it, or they omit it from their lives altogether. The percentage of boys victimized is much higher of committing the same crime committed on them than it is for girls.

I think another thing that confused me is that we have been talking mostly about abuse that happens over a long period of time, so at first I wasn't understanding the not having to have a relationship with the person. But you were talking about hit-and-run rape/abuse.

I also wonder if sexual abuse has a major role in lesbianism. Once again, I have never had those thoughts either. Actually, I think I have before. And I wondered, "What the hell is wrong with me to think about something that is disgusting for me." Lesbianism in itself does not disgust me. But for me to be a lesbian is just as disgusting to me, the same as I am a vegetarian and eating meat would disgust me. Lesbianism and eating dead flesh is ok for other people, but disgusting for me.

No, amiga, actually I am speaking about true relationships. But I think we better just forget it all and not try to explain any further, as it is too difficult for me to talk about this and get my point across. I get confused myself. lol I apologize. A pedophile must justify his/her actions. They tell themselves that what they are doing is out of love and nuture for their victim. And they will also use that line while manipulating their victim

I do not know why my post keeps posting over and over again, so I am posting this just to make it stop!
Coonhound, I am happy about the outcome of your stepson. It is so easy to be a parent. But it is so very difficult to be a caring and responsible parent. I remember hoping my daughter would some day, in her 20's maybe, understand why I was so hard on her. But when she was in the 9th grade, she wrote an essay, about how she will someday look back and be thankful for the lessons her mother gave her. I was so shocked and amazed and proud of her. She is 23 now and turned out to be the most awesome young lady that I wished I could have been at her age.
And thank you for your prayer, Coonhound, but I will never be able to shake the weirdness I have about sex and relationships. It is ok though. I have a loving man that I feel comfortable with. And regardless of my hangups, he hangs in there and loves me anyhow. Also, I do feel confortable with him and so much love, it doesnt seem so bad now.

I'm glad mine are grown now, although there is still lots to worry about. When my daughters are living in foreign countries, they often get around by hitchhiking. Lord have mercy.*
