WHO allegedly created that "everlasting torture chamber" or allows it to exist except your God? And why would a "loving" God then allow anyone to "choose" to go there? Would a loving human parent build a raging bonfire in his backyard knowing that his child might very well jump into it, and then allow his child to jump into it if he could prevent it? And wouldn't the child who tried to jump into it or succeeded have to be crazy?

Brenda, what yesterday showed me is that some "people" here appear to have some serious psychological "issues" to work out. :-)

I know that there's a tendency among Christians, whether it be serious or joking, to attribute human ugliness and evil to Satan's influence. But it seems to me that there's plenty of potential in us humans for our minds and hearts to go awry without Satan's help, and I think we saw plenty of that here yesterday. :-)

Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)?

Most of the students wrote proofs using Boyle’s Law, which states that gas cools when it expands, and heats when it is compressed. One student, however, wrote the following:

First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate at which they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for how many souls are entering Hell, let’s look at the different religions that exist in the world today.

Most of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there is more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all souls go to Hell. So which is it?

If we accept the postulate given to me by Teresa during my Freshman year that, “It will be a cold day in Hell before I sleep with you,” and take into account the fact that I slept with her last night, then number two must be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and has already frozen over. The corollary of this theory is that since Hell has frozen over, it follows that it is not accepting any more souls and is therefore, extinct……leaving only Heaven, thereby proving the existence of a divine being which explains why, last night, Teresa kept shouting “Oh my God.”"

It would be very interesting to hear what Hendrix would be playing today if he were still alive and playing.

Thank you Goblinbee I appreciate that.. well my mom has stage 3 advanced Kidney cancer and she has been through a lot in 5 months. we have had to have 2 surgeries and chemo lots of chemo. and many other things transfusions ect. It has been very hard on her and emotionally on myself. Lately things have been pretty bad and we have been at the hospital quite a bit I am very accustomed to the infusion room. My mom is 61 years old. She will be 62 in May.

Would he have gotten disgusted with the scene and disappeared? Or would he have gone the gracious, beautiful Sonny Rollins or Neil Young route and just kept quietly and powerfully doing his thing?

I watched the program and thought it was pretty well done. I'm sure you would have found it fascinating, even if you probably already know many of the facts it presented.

There were numerous scenes of Lake Tahoe and of the people in the community rallying around the Dugards immediately after the abduction and after she and her daughters were released.

I'm guessing that you might be able to order the video from the Discovery Channel website, if you're interested. Or maybe it will be made available for online viewing at some point either on their website or on a site like YouTube.

And, by the way, they DID show this blog briefly and showed an actor portraying PG posting to it.

Goblinbee, I suspect that if Hendrix were still alive and playing, he would have ventured more and more into jazz and "world" music.

I understand that shortly before his death, he was slated to perform his music with the Gil Evans Orchestra, a predominately jazz group. They went ahead and did a tribute album to him called "The Gil Evans Orchestra Plays the Music of Jimi Hendrix," and I own a copy of it.

I think one of Hendrix's biggest problems was that he wanted to stop the stage antics and get more serious about his music and take it in new directions, but many of his fans didn't want that. They wanted the Freaky Guy playing "Purple Haze" with his teeth and setting his guitar on fire forever.

Had he stuck around, I think he might have finally been able to break away from that and do some very interesting new things, especially with modern technology. But, paradoxically, if he had, he probably wouldn't have ended up the legend that he is because of his early demise.

I have learned a lot more about cancer then I ever wanted to know.. All cancer is not terminal or considered terminal until they are diagnosed at stage 4. which is considered "metastatic" cancer meaning all cancer until you are at stage 4 is confined to one area and has not traveled to another area through the blood stream once that occurs and the cancer spreads then you are considered at stage 4 and basically when you are at stage 4 they have no idea what is going to happen and they will do chemo also. my mom is right below stage 4 so she is not terminal which is good but never the less she has a fast aggressive cancer that is becoming more and more prominent now but still they do not know much about Kidney cancer but that it is an "aggressive cancer" They do know that radiation has nil to no effect what so ever. My mom has a "portacath" which is a perminent tube in her chest that is connected to her heart and it sticks out of her chest perminently so she can have chemo treatments every week for who knows how long.. The doctors are very worried it is spreading when we had her left kidney removed the tumor she had went beyond her Kidney wall and into her muscle and now she is at risk for it spreading to her lymph nodes which will spread to everywhere in her body. Her test continue to come back inconclusive meaning they can not tell if it has spread yet but there is no active cancer growth they can see visually. but the cell could be there still. The chemo is the hardest thing I have ever had to watch anyone go through. It is very hard and sometimes I feel like slapping myself because i need to get a grip because it is very scary to see at times and its like my mom is near death at times. Chemo attacks all your blood and it can not tell what is good blood and what is bad blood so it attacks all your blood. Blood is what carries the cancer..It is a lot to deal with at times. It is very hard to see my mom go through this and my heart breaks for the pain she has to endure everyday.

Brenda, this is all so terrible. My heart really goes out to you and your mom. Cancer impacts so many families. My grandfather died of lung cancer, but my mom and brother have both survived cancer. I don't know a lot about what my brother went through (he has always kept a lot of distance between himself and the family, and when he became ill he retreated even further); I do know he had a rare form of leukemia--hairy cell leukemia. My mom had breast cancer and had to have a radical masectomy, but she has now been cancer-free for 22 years.

Both my mom and my brother are walking miracles.

Brenda, what your mother is going through and what all of you are having to go through with her sounds terrible.

I've often wondered what I would do if I were diagnosed with advanced cancer. If the prognosis was pretty bad from the outset, would I fight it with every treatment possible for as long as possible, or would I just let go? I've often heard that the so-called "cure" or attempted cure of chemo is worse than the disease in terms of the misery it causes.

On the other hand, if you're still relatively young, as your mom certainly is, and you have a lot to live for, I can understand giving it your all.

Do doctors believe that her cancer started in her kidneys or most likely spread there from somewhere else, and what is the official name or type of her cancer?

Forgive me for asking these rather detailed questions, but when I hear of someone being sick or I'm sick myself, my coping strategy, I suppose you could say, is to learn as much about the sickness as I reasonably can. It often helps me feel a little better about it by giving me some sense of control, and the knowledge may help me or someone I care about someday.

Funny you say that my mother sis the same thing. She asked me over and over again what she should do and I told her she HAD to get chemo so did her doctors but still she was so scared and also unsure if financially it was worth it and the only reason she thought that way was because she did not want to leave me in debt with her medical bills if it did not work.But I told her that was not an option that i did not care and that it was only paper..

Chemo is in fact very scary very intense and as real as real can be. It kills you literally and you fight to not be killed. Depending on what type of chemo you are on. Intravenous like my mom is one of the hardest ways.

The cancer started in her Ureter NOT to be confused with her urethra. The way your anatomy is, is you have your urethra which is where your pee travel through that connects to your ureter tube which carries the pee from your lower left kidney which is attached to your ureter. Her cancer started in her Ureter so she has what is called The official name is "Ureter Cancer." The tumor then grew from her Ureter up into her lower left Kidney almost consumed her left Kidney then went out of her Kidney and into the muscle walls. She had surgery not to0o long ago and she was in the hospital for 5 days we had her Ureter removed her Left kidney and part of her muscle wall and her lymph nodes have been tested now and now they are doing continues testing on her lungs and bladder because that is the most likely place it is going to spread next and then she will be stage 4 she is stage 3 advanced because it is on the brink of spreading to 4 which is very bad. So they are slamming her with Chemo every week 5 weeks on and one week off. For months and we have no idea when they want us to stop.

But it also sounds like your mom is very strong to hang in there like she is, and you're all very strong to hang in there with her like you are. Thank goodness she has you and that you're nearby!

I had my own scare with breast cancer this year. I had my first mammogram ever, at the age of 52, and it came back "suspicious." I had to go in for another, more detailed mammogram, and an ultrasound. Phew...everything looked good.

I know it is sheer insanity I waited so long to have a mammogram--especially with my mom's history--but I have a deadly fear of medical procedures, combined with a lack of insurance. But feel free to scold away.

A doctor recently found three breast nodules in my daughter during a physical exam; she needs to make an appointment at the hospital for an ultrasound.

It is all so scary.

No my mom has an HMO policy through UHC United Health Care which they are screwed up let me tell you I know personally from work. provided to her by the bank that she worked for. But because she is so sick had to leave work and is on temporary work disability and they are holding her position for as long as they can so she does not lose her insurance right now or else, we will have to switch to Cobra and she can afford it for one month then she will not have insurance.

Brenda, I think the Mormons have that idea. If I'm remembering right, they keep a prayer list in the temple that you can put someone's name on, then all the workers pray for that person.

Goblinbee, my wife, who's only 44, recently went through something similar to you. She had a breast x-ray that looked "suspicious," and she had to go back in for another one. The radiologist concluded that she was okay, but they're going to keep a pretty close eye on her.

I know it doesn't pay to sit around worrying about cancer and the fact that we all have a pretty "good" chance of developing it somewhere if we live long enough, but it's hard not to worry about it. My aunt Cathy died years ago from a relapse of melanoma when she was in her early 60's, after having been initially diagnosed with it and treated for it ten or maybe even twenty years before, and it was a very sad time for all of us to see what she went through, and we all still miss her. But she was a nurse practitioner who understood what was going on, and she had a very loving family behind her to make her last months as good as they could possibly have been.

I remember the last time I saw her. It was on Christmas day at her house in Concord. The whole family was there. And I've never seen anyone so mindful and appreciative of every precious moment as she was that day. It was extremely moving.

Ohmygod, Brenda, I absolutely hate the state of health coverage in this country. It is just stories like this that make my blood boil. It is beyond comprehension that the most affluent society the world has ever known cannot or will not take care of its members. The greed of the insurance companies is beyond compare. There is a reason the tallest skyscrapers in any city so often belong to insurance companies. GAH!

Brenda, that's a very interesting idea. Of course, it's easy to be skeptical that this could help anyone. After all, by what mechanism or process, natural or supernatural, would it work? But who knows? Maybe there's still a lot that we don't know about these matters.

We need to conduct worldwide experiments of this kind.

In keeping with this, I've often thought of what it would be like if millions if not billions of people all over the world periodically contributed the equivalent of a penny or so to some giant fund, and impoverished people would be selected to receive the money and begin new and better lives with it.

Goblinbee, I was going to post something very similar, but you beat me to it. I guess I would only add that when I look at the Republican party's staunch opposition to healthcare reform and its backing of the status quo, it is all I can do to restrain myself from virulently hating the Republican party and all who belong to it.

I simply cannot fathom the mindset that believes that access to healthcare is a "privilege" rather than one of our most fundamental RIGHTS, and believes that people should reap enormous profits from human illness, injury, and misery.

Wayne County prosecutors on Wednesday charged Jamar Pinkney Sr. with first-degree murder in the shooting death of his son, Jamar Pinkney Jr.

The boy's mother, Lazette Cherry, told the Detroit Free Press that he told her he had sexual contact with a 3-year-old girl and that she phoned his father.

She says his father came to the house Monday in nearby Highlands Park, argued with the boy, made him strip naked and shot him to death in a nearby vacant lot as he begged for his life.

A judge has ordered Pinkney Sr. held without bond.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Blessed with a Friday off school, 15-year-old Alyssa Bustamante dug two holes in the ground to be used as a grave, authorities said. For the next week, she attended classes, all the while plotting the right time for a murder, they said.

That time arrived the evening of Oct. 21, when Bustamante strangled 9-year-old neighbor Elizabeth Olten without provocation, cut the girl's throat and stabbed her, prosecutors said. Why?

"Ultimately, she stated she wanted to know what it felt like," Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. David Rice testified Wednesday during a court hearing over the slaying.

Rice, who interviewed Bustamante in the days after Elizabeth's disappearance, said she confessed to investigators and led them to the fourth grader's well-concealed body in a wooded area near their neighborhood in St. Martins, a small town west of Jefferson City.

A Cole County judge ruled Wednesday that Bustamante, who has been held in Missouri's juvenile justice system, should be tried as an adult. Hours later, the teen was indicted on adult charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action for allegedly using a knife to kill Elizabeth. A judge later entered a not guilty plea on Bustamante's behalf and referred her to the public defender's office.

The court proceedings marked the first time that the suspect in Elizabeth's death had been publicly identified since a two-day search for the girl by hundreds of volunteers. When they found Elizabeth's body Oct. 23, authorities only said that a 15-year-old had led them to it and was in custody for the slaying.

Bustamante remained largely expressionless as she sat with her hands shackled around her waist in court Wednesday. She occasionally looked down beneath the brown bangs that covered her eyes and swallowed hard as a judge read the charges against her.

On one side of the courtroom sat her mother and grandmother, who has been Bustamante's legal guardian for about half of her life. On the other side sat Elizabeth's mother, relatives and friends, several of whom wore pink — Elizabeth's favorite color.

Yes it is really sad for the three year old, the 15 year old's mother and father. But the truth is, the father only did what the God commands of us. It is very sad that he lost his son, and that our laws will put him in prison for doing what God commanded him to do. It is very sad that a 15 year old could do this to a 3 year old.

(11-27) 14:19 PST SACRAMENTO -- A state appeals court has blocked a judge's order removing the lawyer Nancy Garrido wants to defend her against charges of helping her husband kidnap and rape Jaycee Dugard and hold her captive for 18 years.



In its order late Wednesday, the Third District Court of Appeal in Sacramento told an El Dorado County judge to provide transcripts of private testimony in which witnesses apparently accuse the lawyer, Gilbert Maines of Placerville, of loudly discussing a future book or movie deal in a country club restaurant.

Maines has denied making any such statements and has presented supporting declarations from the club's bartender and another witness. Garrido has also declared under oath that she trusts Maines, knows of no conflict of interest and would want him to represent her even if he had a conflict.

Superior Court Judge Douglas Phimister had scheduled a hearing Monday in Placerville on whether to take final action on the order he issued Nov. 5 removing Maines from the case. The appeals court intervened Wednesday and indicated it would decide the issue. It has not scheduled a hearing.

Garrido, 54, and her husband, Phillip Craig Garrido, 58, are charged with kidnapping Dugard from a South Lake Tahoe street in 1991, when Dugard was 11, and holding her for 18 years in the backyard of their home outside Antioch. Both have pleaded not guilty.

Phimister appointed Maines to represent Nancy Garrido in August. He ordered Maines off the case after hearing closed-door testimony that apparently concerned the attorney's comments after lunch at the Cold Springs Golf and Country Club near Placerville on Oct. 30.

The testimony has not been made public. But Maines, shown a transcript by the judge in a closed-door session Nov. 5, countered with sworn declarations by the bartender and the other witness. Both men said they understood there had been false testimony accusing Maines of discussing the case in detail and talking about making money from a book or movie after the trial.

No such conversation took place, the two men said. The bartender, Eduardo Bartolome, said Maines had two cocktails after lunch but never acted drunk, loud or obnoxious. Both men said Maines regularly told fellow club members that he couldn't talk about the case.

Maines also filed papers saying he has never sought the rights to Garrido's story or discussed the possibility of a book or movie deal with her or anyone else. He said that he has no conflict of interest with Garrido and that his removal from the case would "seriously impair her defense."

Maines first asked the appeals court to intervene Monday, and the court told him to refile his arguments in Superior Court. A second El Dorado County judge, James Wagoner, turned him down Wednesday, Maines' office said, but he won a stay from the appeals court later in the day.

By "convicted pedophile," do you mean anyone who has been found guilty of ANY "indecent" act involving a child, including fondling, indecent exposure, or even the mere possession of child pornography, or do you mean one that involves penetration?

Also, why do you want this person castrated, especially if he's in prison, and what if the convicted person didn't actually commit the crime? Would you want the castration to be immediate or carried out only after the convicted is able to receive due process in the appellate courts?

Furthermore, what sentence would you want inflicted on FEMALES convicted of pedophilic offenses? Castration for males and WHAT for females?

Finally, what age would a male convicted of a pedophilic offense have to be in order to be castrated?

It's easy to reflexively say, "Castrate 'em," but not necessarily easy to explain why we should do it, in which cases we should do it, and to whom we should do it.

Media outlets sue for access to Garrido parole files

The Bee sued the state corrections department today along with two other news media, seeking to force the release of documents outlining how parole agents supervised accused kidnapper Phillip Garrido over the course of 10 years during which he allegedly held Jaycee Lee Dugard as his prisoner.

The suit, filed in Sacramento Superior Court this afternoon, is the latest effort by the newspaper to gain access to the documents, which corrections officials have refused to release since August.



KCRA-TV (Channel 3) and the San Francisco Chronicle joined the Bee in the suit against the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and the California Inspector General’s office.

I had an MRI IAM (Internal Auditory Meatus) scan on Tuesday. Wrote about it on my blog. A report by a Neuro-Radiologist goes to my ENT Consultant within 7-10 days.

The Tinnitus in my left ear is so loud I cannot sleep or function at all. The noise of the MRI scanner was the first thing loud enough to mask the noise, and that was 120 dB, so I must have it pretty bad.

Even if the scan is clear there is about 4-5 inner ear problems that don't show up on an MRI, so it could be a 'diagnosis by elimination'.

The kidnapping of the California girl who was held captive for 18 years by a convicted rapist is being turned into a movie - by a horror director whose credits include such low-budget films as "Amateur Porn Star Killer" and "Romance Road Killers" - and she and her loved ones are outraged.

The family of Jaycee Dugard, who was found alive this August after having been snatched off the street at age 11, expressed their strong objections to the filmmaker's plans through a representative.

"There is only one true and factual story to be told," said spokewoman Nancy Seltzer according to etonline.com. "If and when Jaycee and her family think it is appropriate, their story will be told by them, in a forum of their choosing with the respect and thoughtfulness they so deserve. Anyone else speculating about the details of such a personal hurt, for financial gain, is exploitive, hurtful and breathtakingly unkind."

The film maker, Shane Ryan, said he planned to begin shooting the movie next month. Titled "Abducted Girl, An American Sex Slave," the story will reportedly focus on the relationship between Dugard, now 30, and Phillip Garrido, who is accused of raping and fathering the girl's two children while she was held captive in a decrepit compound of shacks and tents in Garrido's backyard in Antioch, Calif. Garrido's wife, Nancy, has also been charged.

"We want to capture how sad this story is, but also how interesting," Ryan told a Sacramento TV station. "We're trying to figure out a way to do that so it's not exploitative.

Dr. Dr., I can't imagine what it would be like to have tinnitus as loud as yours or to suffer paroxysmal complete hearing loss at such a young age or at any age. I'm very sorry you're having to go through this and also have to deal with your acoustic neuroma diagnosis as well.

I'm not clear from reading your blog entry whether doctors believe your neuroma is causing your tinnitus or whether they think something else, related or unrelated, is causing it. In any case, I hope they can get a handle on precisely what's causing it and find some way to treat it effectively.

I don't yet have the diagnosis. Acoustic Neuroma is just one of a series of possibilities.

My consultant mentioned Meniere's disease, as I have all the symptoms. However, my balance is mostly in tact, which makes it less likely. The Consultant agreed that I have a dull eardrum.

I passed the hearing tests (very acute hearing) and the tympannometry (how well eardrum and bones are bouncing and responding). However, the sound does not feel even or equal, and the left side feels blocked, stuck, dull and less clear.

I have constant pain, pressure and fullness in my left ear, and episodes of sudden deafness lasting anything from 10 seconds up to 5, 10 or even 15 minutes.

The Consultant said to me that 'fullness is an inner ear thing, and sudden deafness is also an inner ear thing'.

Acoustic Neuroma and Superior Canal Dehiscence Syndrome (a type of bone erosion) are two things the doctors want to eliminate. I wasn't injected with Gadolinium, so I'm not sure how they expect to examine my inner ear blood vessels exactly. Inner Ear blood vessel spasm can also cause sudden deafness, although most ENT's call this Inner Ear Vascular Ischaemia (like a stroke in your inner ear).

Unlikely diagnoses:

Acoustic Neuroma (Vestibular Schwannoma)
Superior Canal Dehiscence Syndrome

Likely diagnoses:

Meniere's disease

Perilymph Fistula (Inner ear

leaking fluid into middle ear)

Chronic Vestibular Neuritis (viral inflammation of balance nerve)

Chronic Cochlear Neuronitis

Multiple Sclerosis

Arnold Chiari Malformation



Just to rub it all in, the doc who sent me for the MRI scan has now fully retired, so I will be seeing somebody new.

I'm still not clear on something. Months ago I thought you said that you HAD been belatedly diagnosed as having a potentially life-threatening acoustic neuroma. Now you say that this is an "unlikely" cause of your tinnitus. Do you mean that you don't know for sure that you have an acoustic neuroma, or you know for sure that you have it, but you doubt that it's causing your tinnitus?

Yes, Brenda, I agree that they both acted in a depraved manner. But the question I keep asking is why someone of sound mind would act this way. I don't think they could. I think only psychologically ill or defective people could do what the Garridos did.

Many here have disagreed with me. You've been one of them. But I still don't understand how you could.

Now am I saying that because I think the Garridos were psychologically ill or defective they should get a free pass back into society? No, I'm not. I think they should spend the rest of their lives locked away or even be put to death for their crimes. But I don't think we should hate or blame them for what they did, because I believe that they did what they did because they were psychologically ill or defective, and that if either you or I had been born with their bodies and brains and grown up the way they did--in other words, if we had been "in their shoes"--we would have done what they did. There but for the grace of God or fate go you, Brenda, or I.

Dr., this is my first time learning that you have tinnitus and other hearing/ear problems. I am so sympathetic -- my husband also suffers. He has otosclerosis (has had three surgeries in the past ten years), and very loud tinnitus (says it is like someone pounding sheet metal in the same room). This is such a terrible cross to bear.

Next year, a German company called ANM Medical is releasing a ground breaking device for Tinnitus called the 'NeuroStimulator'. You might want to look into that.

There is also the surgical option of implanted electrodes being put on the auditory cortex of the brain. Look up a Belgian doctor called 'Dirk De Ridder'. He's already performed the procedure on 45 patients. 1/4 very good, 1/2 50 percent tinnitus reduction, 1/4 no improvement.

By far the best Doctor to see in the United States when it comes to Hearing problems is Dr. Shlomo Silman, based in Brooklyn. He is world famous, and he invented the Ear Popper device for glue ear. Tell him Peter in Scotland sent you.

I am curious on your thoughts on castration NOT working, apparently.
It is proven that people of this nature that even when they get castrated they will then use objects to penetrate their victims. This is a fact!

So my thoughts are that castration doesn't really work! My view is shared by many others. Have you ever looked into this fact before?

Castration would be such an easy fix wouldnt it? But sadly they are mentally f'ed up so how do you fix that? I assure you castration would not work.
