"A six-year-old boy thought to have been carried away by a helium balloon in Colorado was in fact hiding in a box in an attic at home, an official has said.
Larimer county sheriff Jim Alderman told reporters that apparently Falcon Heene had "been there the whole time".
Police had been searching for the boy after the balloon came down with no sign of him aboard.
The drama was played out on TV, with US networks devoting their airtime to live footage of the balloon over Colorado.
The balloon landed in fields and was surrounded by rescue vehicles after a two-hour flight.
A sheriff's spokeswoman earlier said the boy had reportedly climbed into a basket attached to the balloon but the basket was not attached when it landed.
She said his parents had been "very traumatised".
Police officers had searched on the ground in the direction in which the balloon flew, as well as the neighbourhood where the family lives.

The silver balloon, apparently made by the boy's father, reportedly reached heights of 7,000ft (2km).
It was floating about 40 miles north of Denver before it came down.

The number of people falling victim to identity fraud has soared by 36% during the past year, research shows.
An estimated 4.3 million people in the UK to date are thought to have suffered from the crime, under which fraudsters steal personal details and use them to apply for credit or benefits' in their victim's name.
Research carried out for the organisers of National Identity Fraud Week showed that more people had fallen victim to the crime in the UK than in Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands and Belgium combined.
But despite the growing danger of identity fraud, 64% of people admit they still throw sensitive documents in the bin without first shredding them.
Around 12% of people also said they used the internet without having any security software in place, while just 21% of people regularly check their credit report to ensure no one has been making applications to borrow money in their name.
Only 45% of those questioned looked into why mail they had expected had failed to arrive, to ensure it had not been intercepted by fraudsters.
Tyron Hill, spokesman for National Identity Fraud Prevention Week, said: "The figures speak for themselves - the threat of identity fraud is real and current - yet people are either naive or they continue to ignore the advice that could keep their identity, their finances and their reputation safe.
"Even simple steps, like thoroughly shredding any documents with your name and address on them, will help to minimise your exposure."
National Identity Fraud Prevention Week is being organised by a number of organisations including the fraud prevention service CIFAS, Metropolitan Police, National Fraud Authority and the Home Office's Identity and Passport Service, as well as a number of business groups and the credit reference agencies.
The groups have set up a website outlining the risks of identity fraud and offering tips on how to avoid it."
A case history from an official UK government website
"Mr B was looking forward to a relaxing wine-tasting holiday in South Africa, but thanks to a tip-off from the FBI, he was seized on arrival by airport police and thrown into a cell as one of America's most wanted criminals.
There the pensioner remained for more than a fortnight, while his family protested loudly that there had been a terrible mistake.
The FBI stood by the arrest and said they believed they had the right man. Their Mr B was a fugitive from justice who was wanted for a $5 million telemarketing fraud. They knew their suspect had used several identities in the past, including Mr B and Mr S. He was known to have travelled using a British passport. What's more, the captured Mr B had the same date of birth as the suspect and even physically resembled him.
The FBI eventually realised they had the wrong man after receiving an anonymous tip-off about where Mr S really was - hiding in Las Vegas under the name Mr G. FBI Agents were quick to arrest the real Mr G, and he soon admitted that HE was the right man. After realising they had two people in custody on the same charges, the US authorities knew the Mr B in South Africa couldn't possibly be the right man.
The FBI blamed identity fraud as the reason why the innocent Mr B had been detained.
The suspect had assumed the identity of the real Mr. B by using his date of birth, family history and passport number. He even managed to bear a resemblance to Mr B on his passport photo. The real Mr B's identity had been so thoroughly compromised that it took two weeks and the arrest of the 'real' fraudster before the mistake was realised.
The South African Police Service said most of the details of the Mr B they arrested matched those listed by the FBI on Interpol.
The US authorities explained their mistake: "This is a case of identity theft. As far back as 1989, the person arrested in America was using the name and identity of the British Mr B. It is very frequent crime, and in a sense, it is out of control and obviously in this case it has caused one person an awful lot of harm. He deserves an apology and he certainly gets one from me. I do apologise and others, I'm sure, will as well."

Tara, actually I have posted a few times of mistaken identities leading to persons being wrongly convicted and serving time and later being exonerated.
It is "fuel for Nag"s fire" on his argument about the death penalty that he has stated here since the beginning of the blog, on mistakenly executing an innocent person. I have argued against Nag, by my being for the death penalty. So in essence, my fuel for the fire is more or less, me admitting or offering proof that Nagarjuna has a very valid point there.
Did you understand that? I was givng him more ammo for his argument of executing innocent persons, while I am the one that argues with him about it mucho. lol

I am thinking it will be much faster to remove the old floppy and then let the computer realize it is not there and boot to C. Probably will fix it much faster that way and who needs an old floppy drive anymore anyway right.

I know that the death penalty is a very controversial subject with strong views both ways.
Long ago I just accepted it was best if we agree to differ and so it is not a subject I have persued any further.

The intelligence level in this blog is very low. I do not care what anyone says about it. It is a fact. Nagarjuna is highly intelligent and his knowledge on so many topics under the sun is very superior to any of us in here. That is a fact. People in here do not even understand the definitions of half of the words he uses, but want to argue on what he says without even knowing the meaning of what he had just said. It reminds me of someone saying that they wore a black skirt to the club last night, and a black person hearing it, and calling the person a racist. And not just a racist, but a white cracker honky racist. Then saying that "God dont like ugly, so fuck you"
Not to mention that many persons in here are underestimating Nagarjunas intelligence, in their attempts at trying to intimidate him, without realizing or seeing how many times that Nagarjuna has called them on all the holes in their stories.
Nagarjuna is firing his answers to all of the comments and questions to him like a freeking machine gun. And all he gets in return is a repetitive inquiry as to why he wants to control the blog and the commenters. And his questions go unanswered, unless you consider "Why are you always trying to argue?" a universal answer to all questions. Stop fronting, people. Try to be yourselves. And before you snap out on words that are being said, please call someone that can read better than you can, and ask them to please explain what was just said, so you can clearly understand the intended meaning.
